THE BLUE SKY
(BASED ON "FINAL FANTASY")

BY

SOPHIE GREEN

EPILOGUE

He heard a knock on the door. He slowly lifted himself out of his chair and went to answer it. And there was Lisa, with a look of concern on her face. He broke down into tears in her arms.

She held him, and said, “It’s OK, it’s OK. Please, whatever the matter is, please tell me. Please tell me what I can do to help.”

They went inside the room and closed the door. He told her everything. What had happened, and what he had been about to do – the noose was still tied to the curtain rail. “I didn’t know what else to do. Where did it all go so wrong...?”

She stayed with him throughout that night, talking to him, letting him know that, no matter how bad things got, there would always be some hope. And that, no matter how bad he felt, he would always have his friends to turn to in times of need.

The following morning they went for a walk together, travelling down the same path that he had gone the previous day. The world today felt different, as though he had been reborn. Had he gone through with what he had planned with the noose, he wouldn’t have seen this day, and if he had given into his feelings of anger, then this could have been a much darker day.

At the top of the hill looking out over the sea, they looked up at the clear blue sky, and he felt at peace. The girl would not be his as he had hoped, but neither, he was sure, would she be his final fantasy.

The world would go on, there would be others, and, one day, things may be different. But for now he would fight on.

He looked to his side, but Lisa had gone. But he knew that she would always be with him.
